Steelworkers praise Hauschild’s steadfast support for mining, historic protections for workers, and repeated efforts to support laid off Steelworkers

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Eveleth, MN — The United Steelworkers (USW) announced their endorsement of Senator Grant Hauschild for reelection to the Minnesota Senate, citing his unwavering commitment to the mining industry, protecting union jobs, and standing with Steelworkers and their families when they need it most.

Throughout his first term, Hauschild has been a leading advocate for Minnesota’s iron mining industry and the workers who power it. In three consecutive legislative sessions, Hauschild fought to secure extended unemployment benefits for laid off miners at Northshore Mining, Minorca Mine, and Hibbing Taconite, providing critical financial support to hundreds of Steelworkers and their families during difficult economic times.

“Grant Hauschild doesn’t just talk about supporting Steelworkers. He shows up and delivers when our members need him most,” said Cathy Drummond, United Steelworkers District 11 Director. “During his first term, Grant went to bat for laid off miners and their families. He fought to protect our mining industry, advance permitting reform to create more good union jobs, and strengthen the rights of working people across Minnesota. Grant understands that the Iron Range was built by generations of hardworking union families, and he has never wavered in standing with them. That’s why our union is proud to stand with Grant Hauschild.”

Hauschild also championed bipartisan permitting reform to cut unnecessary delays and make Minnesota more competitive for development while maintaining strong environmental and labor protections. As Vice Chair of the Senate Labor Committee, he helped advance some of the strongest labor organizing rights, workplace protections, and worker benefits in the country, including expanded collective bargaining protections, paid family and medical leave, and earned sick and safe time.

Hauschild thanked the United Steelworkers for their endorsement and reaffirmed his commitment to putting the Northland First.

“The Iron Range built this country, and our steelworkers are the backbone of our communities,” said Senator Grant Hauschild. “When our mines are running, our communities thrive. And when times get tough, we have a responsibility to stand with the workers and families who have given so much to our region. That’s exactly what I’ve done in my first term, and it’s what I’ll keep doing. I’ll fight for our mines, I’ll fight for our unions, and I’ll never back down when it comes to protecting the jobs and livelihoods of Iron Range families. I’m incredibly proud to have the Steelworkers standing with me.”

The United Steelworkers join a broad coalition of organized labor supporting Hauschild’s reelection, reflecting his record of delivering results, working across party lines, and putting the people of the Northland ahead of partisan politics.
